Nope… I haven’t forgetten about this blog

January 29, 2010

While we had a couple of nice hikes over Thanksgiving (Caesar Creek SP and East Fork SP) as well as a mountain bike ride at East Fork SP on the easy trail, which I failed to record, most of our activities have moved indoors and resulted in a multitude of entries in our Quest for Fitness blog, which has entered it’s 2nd year.  Staying physically active, whether its cycling, hiking, Olympic Weightlifting or other, has been our most significant focus.

On January 23rd, we had a fortuitous break in the weather for January…. 50F and even a spot or two of sunshine…. so I threw the bike hitch back on and we loaded up to go over and ride on the Little Miami Trail.

Cycled 15 miles, 1:15, average pace was quite low, but leisurely.

Nice gentle ride… just out enjoying the wind in our face and the fresh sights after doing exercise indoors for the past few months.. even saw a deer and couple of small ani-mules.  There were over 20 cyclist out on the trail and road taking advantage of a rare January day suitable for riding.

Just as quickly as the nice weather appeared, it disappeared, and we’ve been mired in below freezing temps for the past week.  I’m glad I had the foresight to take the bike hitch back off the Jeep while it was still warm.

Conquered My Personal “Hill of Death” with the Surly LHT

August 21, 2009

Penny got her new touring bike today, a Surly Long Haul Trucker. It’s very similar to mine, with slightly different components. I bought the complete unit ordered from Surly, whereas she got hers from a bike shop that bought the frame and added miscellaneous components from their own stock.

As a trial run on her new bike, we started out from our typical Kingsview Industrial Park starting location, but rather than head straight toward the Little Miami Trail, I suggested we head toward the Hill of Death and see if she needed any bike adjustments before we got miles away from the vehicle. We made a quick adjustment to her seat and it made a huge difference in her stroke and stability…. no more rocking side to side, but quiet on the saddle instead.

As we approached the base of the hill, I told Penny I wanted to give the hill a shot since I’d never tried it on the Surly LHT before. The hill climbs approx 125ft in a 1/4 mile. I forget exactly what grade that is, but it has kicked my butt for the past 14 months. I knew the LHT had low gearing for touring, but I had no idea just how capable it was. More out of curiosity, I put it in the lowest gear and pretended I was a hamster on a wheel. With my legs churning and making slow progress, the crest of the hill kept getting closer and closer. When I reached about 3/4 of the way up the hill, a place where I normally see purple spots and feel ready to slip into a coma, my breathing rate had increased, but mentally I’d crossed a boundary…. one where I knew this time the hill was mine!! I quickened my pace, which caused me to double time my breathing… so I relaxed again and slowed my pace, knowing the surest way to the top was a steady and maintainable pace. As I reached the top, the Rocky theme began playing in my head and I lifted both hands off the bars and shook them in success! After today, I’d never consider this the Hill of Death.

I was surprised that I was able to do this without warming up first, but the high cadence rate did a good job of cranking my cardio without toasting my legs.  I can see trying to do this in a higher gear in the future!

We rode back toward the vehicle, then toward the Little Miami Trail, basking in our hill summit!  Penny was pleasantly surprised by the stability and handling of the LHT.  The steel frame and larger tires provides good bump mitigation, making the ride more comfortable… keeping the fatigue down.

When we reached Morrow, I did a bit more tweaking on her bike, then on the way back home, we laid the hammer down a bit.  It was the first time that I’d really stood on it in the large chain ring.  Keeping the acceleration gradual, Penny was keeping pace nicely until I started muscling it more.  She said to take off because she wanted to see how it felt out of the draft, so I went to almost the highest gear and stood on it.  The acceleration is slower than our Cannondale Road Bikes, but the LHT is still quite capable.  I wish I had a computer setup on this bike, because my speed was in the high 20’s, but not sure how close to 30mph I was.

The Surly LHT could easily become my favorite bike.  It has the smoothness for long rides, but also is heavy enough that strong exertions make for a good workout.  With the way it handles even the steepest of hills, it will handle rolling hills nicely even with a touring load, and could open up some of the more scenic less travel roads in our area for some exploration!

Fay Bainbridge SP, Next Step Conditioning, and Cove 2 Diving

May 19, 2009

Tuesday, we decided to take a day trip over to Bainbridge Island via the land route around the west side of Puget Sound.  Our motivation for the drive was to find Coach Izzy at Next Step Conditioning.  We knew him from Scubaboard and Facebook and knew that since we were this close we needed to stop in and see him.  In addition to his website, he also has a blog we like to follow!

When we got to Bainbridge Island, we had trouble finding Next Step Conditioning.  More accurately, we had trouble believing the GPS because the driveway led back into the woods, we thought, to someone’s home, we disregarded it and drove down to Fay Bainbridge State Park to visit there, take some pics, and look up the address to Next Step again.

At Fay Bainbridge State Park, we got some shots of the picturesque driftwood all over the beach.

Afterwards, we circled back around and looked for Next Step again.  This time we opted to drive up the driveway…. way back up the driveway.  It was very cool back in there with a few residences, as well as the Next Step building.  We poked around trying to find our way in, and Coach Izzy stuck his head out window and asked if he could help us, then suddenly exclaimed… PENNY… BOB!!! Well… I guess we were in the right place!!

Coach knew that I’d talked about a sore problematic shoulder, so he volunteered to take a look at it and worked me over pretty good.

He worked me over and left me bruised, but much of the previous strain was relieved!  Thanks Coach!  Before we left, we scheduled a return visit to work out with Izzy on Saturday.

We took the ferry from Bainbridge Island back to downtown Seattle, so that we could get back to Bob’s in time to prep for the evening dive.  The ferry was a cool experience and dumped us right downtown.  If someone lived over on the Island, this would be a great way to get back and forth to work without driving around Puget Sound!  In fact, just park on the island and walk around or use public transportation once you reach Seattle.

In the evening after Bob got off work, we headed over to Cove 2 and met up with Colleen, as well as Marc.  Colleen and I weren’t up to diving, so Penny, Marc, and Bob took a tour of the Cove, much to Penny’s delight.  Colleen and I shared coffee and many stories!

Penny, Marc, Bob

You can see in the pic one of the people ferry’s that shuttles back and forth between West Seattle and Downtown Seattle.

Another Great Day!!

New Blog

January 4, 2009

In order to reduce the amount of clutter and not water down the focus of our Outdoor Activity Blog, I created a new blog just to be used as a Fitness Blog/Diary.

Quest For Fitness

I’ll use that one to log workouts, routines, commentary, or common cycling primarily related to just trying to get in shape.  That will leave this log for the (hopefully) more interesting endeavors (which the Fitness Quest is hopefully prepping us for!)

I (maybe we) will be injecting CrossFit type workouts into our fitness activities.

After reading quite a bit of information from Crossfit, Brand X, and personal anecdotes from Mountain Bikers, I decided to incorporate some of the CrossFit philosophy into my workout.  As I feel inspired, I’ll see if more or less CrossFit becomes a reality.

Why the CrossFit philosophy?
Cycling and Scuba Diving leave major parts of my body unworked and/or atrophied.  Carrying heavy steel doubles on heaving boats for wreck diving, or up and down steps across uneven ground for Cave diving, or riding a mountain bike on twisting single-track requires good core strength.  Rather than just rely on those activities to get a core workout, I’d rather try to be proactive.  Also, these activities sometimes require maximum strength efforts that none of my favorite activities are providing preparation for (e.g. Road Cycling, Scuba)

It seems that CrossFit-type activities might fill the bill.
